Wandsworth Roundabout landmark replacement recommended for approval

Plans to replace a south London advertising structure, featured in A Clockwork Orange, have been recommended for approval by Wandsworth Council officers.

  • Wandsworth Council officers have recommended approval for a new timber, tree-inspired advertising structure.
  • The new structure, approximately 25m tall, would replace the existing landmark at Wandsworth Roundabout.
  • The project is privately funded and aims to increase revenue generation at the site.

Controversial plans to replace a prominent advertising structure at Wandsworth Roundabout have been recommended for approval by Wandsworth Council officers. The existing circular landmark, installed in 1995, featured in Stanley Kubrick's film A Clockwork Orange.

The proposed replacement is a timber, tree-inspired structure, approximately 25m tall, with four advertising boards that would be slightly larger than the current ones. Council officers stated there were no planning concerns requiring refusal of the project.

The proposal was put forward by advertising specialists Wildstone Estates, who acquired the site last year under a long lease with Transport for London (TfL). The project is confirmed to be privately funded, with Wildstone Estates aiming to increase revenue generation.

Residents have raised 153 objections on the council's website, describing the plans as an "eyesore" and a "waste of money." However, Wandsworth Council stated the new structure would be of a "similar scale" and provide a "focal point to the roundabout."
