Watch collecting: From humble curios to valuable timepieces

Andy Blackmore, City AM's picture editor, discusses the unpredictable nature of watch collecting, where once-common items can become highly sought after.

  • A 1983 Seiko watch, initially costing around £130, has seen examples sell for over £2,000.
  • The value of collectible timepieces can be unpredictable, with items like a humble Ingersoll 'Mickey Mouse' watch potentially becoming highly sought after.
  • Andy Blackmore collects watches for the personal history they represent, rather than the likelihood of significant financial gain.

The world of watch collecting is characterised by its unpredictable nature, according to Andy Blackmore, picture editor at City AM. What may initially appear as a common or eccentric item could eventually transform into a valuable collectible or design icon.

An example of this trend is the Seiko reference 7A28-7000, designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro in 1983. Originally purchased by Alien fans for approximately £130, examples of this watch have since sold for more than £2,000, particularly after its appearance on Sigourney Weaver's wrist in the film Aliens.

Mr Blackmore highlights that the appeal of watch collecting often lies in the stories and personal history associated with each timepiece. He notes that while the chance of becoming rich from collecting is low, the connection to a piece of someone's past is a significant draw.
