Stan Wawrinka's grand slam career ended with a first-round defeat to Matteo Berrettini at the US Open, losing 7-6(4) 7-6(3) 6-0. The 41-year-old, who won the title in 2016, was bidding an emotional farewell before retiring at the end of the season.
In front of a packed Grandstand crowd, Wawrinka fought hard, saving set points and breaking Berrettini's serve, but the Italian, 30, held his nerve in both tiebreaks. The third set saw Berrettini produce a bagel, ending Wawrinka's glittering grand slam career.
Wawrinka, a three-time grand slam champion, was initially left out of the singles field despite applying for a wildcard, but was given a place after Patrick Kypson withdrew. He said he was grateful for the opportunity to finish where he won a grand slam 10 years ago.
Berrettini, a semi-finalist in New York in 2019, will face Mariano Navone in the second round after Navone knocked out fourth seed Novak Djokovic in five sets.
