As thousands of patients began receiving their first deliveries of the new daily weight-loss pill, Wegovy, on Monday, a significant expansion of private weight management options has been unlocked in the UK. Manufactured by Danish pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk, Wegovy is now available through private prescriptions across high street and online pharmacies, providing an alternative for individuals managing their weight outside of the NHS.
The Wegovy pill contains semaglutide, the same active GLP-1 ingredient found in the injectable version of Wegovy, and studies suggest it offers comparable effectiveness. The UK medicines regulator approved the pill on 11th June, allowing it to be prescribed privately to overweight or obese individuals following a medical consultation, and as part of a broader healthy diet and exercise plan.
However, concerns have been raised regarding the proliferation of counterfeit medications online. According to Megan Rannard from intellectual property law firm Marks & Clerk, numerous websites falsely claim to be legitimate online pharmacies, often advertising medication without requiring a consultation or prescription and at suspiciously low prices. Rannard highlighted the clear public health risk posed by counterfeit pharmaceuticals and the potential for these websites to be fronts for fraud or phishing scams.
For those considering Wegovy, pricing varies depending on the dose and treatment plan. According to an online pharmacy, the medication can cost around £2.30 per day when purchased through multi-month treatment plans. A month's supply for the starting dose of 1.5mg, as part of a three-month bundle, could cost approximately £69, while the highest dose of 25mg might reach £189 per month.
Patients embarking on Wegovy pill treatment must adhere to specific instructions for optimal absorption. Abdal Alvi, Chief Clinical Officer at Simple Online Pharmacy, stressed that it is not a tablet that can be taken casually and should be consumed with a small sip of water on an empty stomach after fasting for at least eight hours.
Clinical trials have shown that individuals taking the 25mg daily Wegovy pill lost between 14% and 17% of their body weight over 64 weeks, depending on adherence to the regimen. It's worth noting that common side effects include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea; however, these are often temporary and can be managed with medical guidance.
The introduction of the pill form offers a more convenient option for many, particularly those who have a fear of needles, travel frequently, or simply prefer a daily tablet over a weekly injection. As always, it is essential to discuss any concerns or questions with a healthcare professional before starting treatment.
