A Welsh government scheme, which guarantees landlords an income while local authorities manage their properties, is set to close to new homes at the end of this year. The National Residential Landlords' Association (NRLA) stated that no further properties should be brought into the scheme after December 2026.
The programme, launched in January 2022, allows landlords to lease properties to local authorities for five to 20 years, with councils guaranteeing payments at Local Housing Allowance rates. Grants of up to £5,000 are also available for property improvements. Approximately 700 homes across Wales are currently let through Leasing Scheme Wales.
The NRLA has advised landlords currently participating in the scheme to contact their local authority directly to understand future plans. Ministers are working with councils on how the programme will be managed once the current funding period concludes.
