The Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (RFCA) for Wales marked a significant milestone in its efforts to support the UK's Reserve Forces and Cadet Force Adult Volunteers, hosting over 100 guests at the Senedd in Cardiff Bay. The reception, held on the eve of Reserves Day, was a powerful reminder of the crucial role employers play in enabling their staff to serve in the Reserve Forces, contributing not just to national defence but also fostering a culture of social responsibility within organisations.

Organised in partnership with the Senedd Armed Forces’ and Cadets’ Cross Party Group, the event brought together prominent figures from across Wales. James Evans MS, former co-chair of the Cross Party Group, set the tone for an evening dedicated to recognising contributions to national defence with his opening address. Deputy First Minister and Cabinet Minister for Social Justice and Equality, Sioned Williams MS, delivered the keynote speech, underscoring the Welsh Government's appreciation for the commitment shown by both Reservists and their employers.

A highlight of the reception was a presentation by Squadron Leader Paul Thomas, Executive Officer of 614 (County of Glamorgan) Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force. He spoke alongside Daniel Horwood, a Reservist from 614 Squadron and an employee of General Dynamics. John Smith, Trials Operations Manager at General Dynamics Land Systems UK, offered the employer's perspective, highlighting the benefits and responsibilities of supporting reservists within the workforce.

A significant moment during the reception was the public signing of the Armed Forces Covenant by Companies House. Dr Andy King, Chief Executive of Companies House, spoke about their commitment before formally endorsing the covenant. This act demonstrates a tangible commitment from a major public sector organisation to the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant.

The evening concluded with a spirited display from the 3rd Battalion The Royal Welsh Corps of Drums, providing a fitting close to the event. Brigadier Russ Wardle OBE DL, Chair of RFCA for Wales, delivered the concluding thank you address, reinforcing the gratitude for the collective support. Craig Middle, the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Relationship Manager for South Wales, also expressed appreciation for the strong turnout and the invaluable contribution of Welsh reservists and their employers to Defence during Armed Forces Week.

Why this matters: This event highlights the crucial partnership between civilian employers and the UK's Reserve Forces. Their support ensures that Reservists can contribute to national defence while maintaining their civilian careers.

What this means for you: What this means for you: This ongoing support for Reserve and Cadet Forces contributes to the UK's national security and defence. It also promotes a more inclusive workplace culture that recognises military service within civilian employment.
