Wendy’s and Chipotle Confirm Restaurants Unaffected by Cyclosporiasis Outbreak

Fast-food chains Wendy’s and Chipotle have stated their UK and US restaurants are not linked to the recent cyclosporiasis outbreak. Health authorities continue to investigate the source of the parasite, which has caused dozens of illnesses.

  • Wendy’s and Chipotle issued statements confirming no connection to the cyclosporiasis outbreak.
  • The outbreak has been traced to contaminated produce, but specific suppliers remain unidentified.
  • UK health officials are monitoring the situation, though no cases have been reported in Britain so far.

Wendy’s and Chipotle have moved to reassure customers that their restaurants are not affected by the ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak that has sickened dozens of people in recent weeks. Both chains issued separate statements on Thursday emphasising that their supply chains and menu items are unrelated to the contaminated produce suspected in the outbreak.

The outbreak, caused by the Cyclospora parasite, has been linked to imported fresh vegetables, though health agencies have yet to pinpoint a specific supplier or product. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported over 60 confirmed cases across multiple states, with hospitalisations in some instances. No deaths have been recorded.

For UK consumers, the risk remains low. The Food Standards Agency confirmed that no cases have been reported in Britain, and the implicated produce is not known to have entered UK supply chains. Nonetheless, the agency said it is liaising with international partners as a precaution.

The news had no discernible impact on the London stock market, with the FTSE 100 closing flat at 8,240.17 on Friday. Shares in major UK-listed food service companies, such as Compass Group and Greggs, were unchanged, as analysts viewed the outbreak as geographically contained. “This is a US-focused issue for now, and UK operators are not exposed,” said one City analyst who asked not to be named.

Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by ingesting the Cyclospora cayetanensis parasite, often via contaminated fresh produce. Symptoms include watery diarrhoea, stomach cramps, and nausea, and can last several weeks if untreated. The outbreak serves as a reminder of the fragility of global food supply chains, though UK regulators maintain robust import checks.

Why this matters: While the outbreak is centred in the US, it highlights the risks of imported fresh produce and the importance of food safety protocols that protect UK consumers.

What this means for you: What this means for you: UK consumers face no immediate risk from this outbreak, but it underscores the need for vigilance when eating imported fresh produce. No changes to your dining habits are necessary.
