Werro beats Hodgkinson to European 800m gold, setting new Championship record

Audrey Werro of Switzerland claimed the European 800m title, defeating two-time champion Keely Hodgkinson, who secured silver.

  • Audrey Werro won the European 800m title with a new Championship record of 1:54.81.
  • Keely Hodgkinson finished second, two-tenths of a second behind Werro.
  • Hodgkinson had previously won the European 800m in 2022 and 2024.

Switzerland's Audrey Werro has claimed the European 800m gold medal, setting a new Championship record of 1:54.81 at the Alexander Stadium. This victory saw her defeat Britain's Keely Hodgkinson, who took home the silver medal, finishing two-tenths of a second behind.

The result means Hodgkinson, 24, missed out on a European hat-trick, having won the title in both 2022 and 2024. Despite the outcome, Hodgkinson expressed "mixed emotions," stating, "When you feel like you’ve not put a foot wrong and it was a great race, and really close, I can’t really be too disappointed."

Hodgkinson acknowledged a challenging summer, including a training accident that affected her knees, but confirmed she is "in the shape of my life." She added, "Ultimately, it’s another championship done, another medal added to the collection, and I have to be happy with that. I’m not satisfied but we’ll get there." Femke Broeders-Bol secured the bronze medal.

Why this matters: The outcome establishes a fresh rivalry in women's 800m athletics, with the long-standing world record potentially in sight for the top contenders.
