WhatsApp has introduced a range of new functionalities, significantly upgrading its integration with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, alongside improvements for iPad users and media sharing. These updates are part of Meta's broader strategy to position WhatsApp as a more comprehensive cross-device communication platform.
For drivers, the enhanced Apple CarPlay and Android Auto experience means greater convenience and safety. While WhatsApp was previously accessible in these car systems, its capabilities were limited. Now, users can hands-free listen to and respond to messages, make calls, review their call history, and access their favourite contacts directly from their car's infotainment screen.
iPad users will also benefit from a long-requested feature: the ability to sign up for a WhatsApp account directly from their device. Previously, an iPad WhatsApp account had to be linked to a primary phone. Now, users can register and set up an account directly through the iPad app, requiring only a phone number for the one-time passcode verification. Once registered, the iPad app will function as a standalone account, independent of a linked phone.
Beyond car and tablet integration, WhatsApp is introducing several other user-centric features. Users can now share songs directly from Apple Music or Spotify to their WhatsApp Status, allowing for more personalised expression. Additionally, the app has improved its handling of PDF documents, enabling users to open, highlight, and annotate PDFs directly within chats on web and desktop versions without needing to download them first.
These latest additions follow a series of recent updates from WhatsApp. Earlier in the year, the company rolled out usernames, allowing users to share profiles without disclosing their phone numbers. In late May, Meta also launched a subscription plan for WhatsApp, offering extra features such as profile customisation and story insights, aligning with similar "Plus" offerings for Instagram and and Facebook.
