In France, a resident of Bordeaux, Pierre Pourquery, told the BBC that people in the city are feeling "anxious and fearful" as a wildfire burns just 15km from its outskirts. He noted that a "thick smoke haze" has blanketed the city, causing breathing difficulties for some and leading people to wear masks. Further south, in Cotignac, Jo Barnes and her family described returning home after a four-day evacuation to find the hillside blackened, having witnessed a fire come within metres of their gas tank.
The impact on holidaymakers has been significant. Sarah from Hertfordshire was forced to cut short her family's week-long holiday in Bordeaux due to the smoke, describing a "strong smell of smoke everywhere" in their sealed apartment, which she found "quite worrying". Her sister-in-law, Georgia, was advised not to travel to Lacanau, near Bordeaux, where her family had planned to stay. Georgia now faces a potential loss of over £3,500 after being unable to secure a refund from her accommodation provider because the fires had not yet reached Lacanau at the time of cancellation.
Similar harrowing experiences are being reported in Spain, where over 27,000 hectares have burned in the central Madrid region alone. Olga Congacha, who evacuated her village quickly with her husband, told AFP news agency that it was a "critical situation and people were scared." In Castellón province, Ricardo Pozo expressed his shock, stating he had "never seen a fire this intense before." Maria Garcia, living in Betxí, described to Reuters how the fires had put life on pause for evacuees, lamenting, "You can see the mountains you've known your whole life burning."
The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises British nationals travelling to France and Spain to monitor local media for updates, follow the advice of local authorities, and be aware of the potential for road closures and disruptions to public transport. British citizens in affected areas are urged to ensure they have adequate travel insurance and to contact their tour operators or airlines for information on altered travel plans. The ongoing situation highlights the growing challenges posed by extreme weather events across Southern Europe.
