The French city of Bordeaux is bracing for potential mass evacuations as a major wildfire advances to within nine miles of its perimeter. Cestas saw 17,000 residents evacuated two days ago, and across the region, 42,000 hectares of land have been consumed by fire, and 240 houses destroyed. Despite a slight reduction in the fire's speed, Mayor Steffe warned that the danger from flying embers and sudden wind changes remains, stating, 'we are all scared in front of this situation.'
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu highlighted the severity of the country's fire season, noting that 116,085 hectares have already burned and 13,566 fire starts have been recorded since January 2026. He revealed that nine out of ten fires are human-caused, often due to carelessness, though some are deliberately set, leading to 162 arrests since 6 July.
