WindBorne Systems, a startup specialising in weather data collection and AI-driven forecasting, has announced a $37 million Series B funding round. The company, founded in 2019, uses long-flying weather balloons to gather data, which is then fed into its forecasting model.
The funding round was co-led by Khosla Ventures and Galvanize, with additional investments from TransLink Capital, Lux Capital, and previous investors. This latest round values WindBorne Systems at $250 million.
According to CEO John Dean, the company aims to make it easier for organisations to utilise weather forecasts. WindBorne Systems currently operates 20 launch sites globally and has approximately 600 balloons in the air at any given time, collecting data from challenging locations.
The company's primary customers include government agencies, such as the U.S. National Weather Service, U.S. Air Force, and U.S. Navy. WindBorne Systems plans to expand its customer base in the private sector, initially focusing on investment funds that use weather data for predicting commodity prices.
