Winnie-the-Pooh, the character from AA Milne's books, celebrated its 100th anniversary this week. The book Winnie-the-Pooh, illustrated by EH Shepard, was published on 14 October 1926.
By the end of 1926, the book had sold 150,000 copies in the US. Birthday celebrations for the centenary have included a week of special programmes on Radio 4, introduced by the Queen, a collection of Royal Mail stamps, and a Google doodle.
Despite its success, Milne and his son Christopher Robin Milne reportedly resented the character, with Milne feeling it eclipsed his other work and Christopher Robin Milne believing it stole his childhood. Winnie-the-Pooh was voted No 7 in the BBC Big Read poll in 2003.
