Winter Fuel Payments for 2026/27: Eligibility and Income Thresholds Confirmed

Eligibility rules for the Winter Fuel Payment for 2026/27 have been confirmed, with payments ranging from £100 to £300 per eligible person.

  • To qualify for Winter Fuel Payment this winter, individuals must have been born on or before 27 June 1960.
  • The payment amount is between £100 and £300 per eligible person, depending on individual circumstances.
  • HMRC will recover the payment if an individual's income exceeds £35,000.

The official entitlement rules for the Winter Fuel Payment, also known as the winter fuel allowance, for winter 2026/27 have been clarified. Individuals born on or before 27 June 1960 and usually living in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland could qualify for the payment.

The amount received can vary between £100 and £300 per eligible person, influenced by factors such as living arrangements and individual income. The qualifying week for this winter was 21 to 27 September 2026.

It is not a requirement to receive Pension Credit to qualify for the Winter Fuel Payment in 2026/27. However, if an individual's income exceeds £35,000, HMRC will recover the payment, typically through their tax code or Self Assessment tax bill.

Most eligible individuals will receive their payment automatically in November or December 2026, along with a letter explaining the amount and bank account used. Those who do not receive State Pension or other listed payments, or who have deferred their State Pension, may need to make a claim by the deadline of 31 March 2027.

What this means for you: If you were born on or before 27 June 1960 and usually live in England, Wales, or Northern Ireland, you could be eligible for a Winter Fuel Payment of £100 to £300 this winter. Check your individual income, as payments are recovered if your income exceeds £35,000.
