A woman died three months after sustaining severe burns when a paint canister exploded in a garden fire in Newport.

  • Katie Louise Marshall, 32, died on 24 September after suffering 45-55% burns.
  • The incident occurred in June when a paint canister in a bin bag exploded in a garden fire.
  • A full inquest into her death is scheduled for 9 June 2027.

Katie Louise Marshall, 32, of Vaughan Williams Drive, Newport, died on 24 September at Bristol Royal Infirmary, three months after suffering severe burns. Her death followed an incident in June when a paint canister exploded in a garden fire she had lit.

Gwent Coroner's Court heard that Ms Marshall had placed a black bin bag containing rubbish and a paint canister on the fire. The explosion resulted in her suffering 45-55% burns. She was initially taken to the Grange Hospital in Cwmbran, then transferred to Morriston Hospital, Swansea, before being moved to Bristol.

Ms Marshall died from bacterial pneumonia, which was caused by inhalation and burns. Senior coroner for Gwent, Caroline Saunders, described her death as "unnatural" and adjourned the hearing. Ms Saunders stated that her investigation would examine "the circumstance of the fire and how she obtained her injuries and a narrative of the treatment thereafter." A full inquest is set to take place on 9 June 2027.
