A dramatic rescue attempt turned into a devastating tragedy when a 75-year-old woman from Cwmbran lost her life after being run over by her own car while trying to save a cat from the road. Jacqueline Davies, known to her family as a 'strong, independent, spirited mum', met with a horrific fate on 6 July 2026 in the Hollybush area when her red Ford Fiesta rolled forward on a slope due to its handbrake failing.
Ms Davies had exited the vehicle to move the animal to safety before returning to find the car rolling down the incline. Despite suffering severe injuries, she managed to make a 999 call from the scene and was subsequently taken to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Tragically, she succumbed to her injuries the following day.
The provisional cause of death, as disclosed by Gwent Coroners' Court, attributes the fatal outcome to a major haemorrhage, injury to the inferior vena cava – the body's largest vein – and trauma.
In an emotional statement, Ms Davies' family expressed their profound grief, stating they were 'heartbroken beyond words at the sudden loss of our beloved mum.' They added that she was 'honest, determined, and full of character, with a strength that inspired those around her. Our family is devastated and life will never be the same without her.'
Gwent Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ms Davies' death and have issued an appeal for witnesses, particularly those who were travelling in the Bryn Millwr area of Hollybush between 10:00 BST and 10:30 BST on 6 July.
