A woman has tragically died and an eight-year-old girl is fighting for her life in hospital following a collision between a car and a train at a level crossing in Hoghton, Lancashire. The incident, which occurred at around 08:50 BST on Station Road, near Preston, prompted a significant emergency services response.
British Transport Police (BTP) confirmed the fatality and the critical condition of the child, who has been taken to Alder Hey Children's Hospital for urgent treatment. Members of the family are currently receiving support from specially trained officers. No other injuries have been reported, either from within the car or among passengers on the Northern service travelling from Colne to Preston.
The scene was attended by multiple clinical teams from the North West Ambulance Service, including the hazardous area response team and two air ambulances. Lancashire Fire and Rescue Services deployed four fire engines and specialist appliances, urging the public to avoid the area while recovery and investigation efforts are underway.
The Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) has dispatched a team of inspectors to gather evidence as part of a preliminary examination. A decision on whether a full investigation will be launched is expected in the coming days. Both Network Rail and Northern Trains have pledged their full cooperation with the ongoing enquiries.
Northern Trains has announced that services between Preston and Blackburn are suspended "until further notice," advising passengers not to attempt travel on this route today. This disruption is expected to continue as the investigation progresses and the line remains closed.
