A young woman has died in Brazil following a devastating extreme sports accident where instructors allegedly failed to secure her with a safety cord before she jumped from a bridge. Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, 21, was reportedly released from the 40-metre-high structure in São Paulo state without the necessary rope attached, leading to her immediate death.
The incident, which occurred on Saturday, saw three men subsequently arrested. Police are now investigating them on suspicion of homicide with eventual intent – a charge that applies when an individual does not directly intend to cause death but assumes the risk of doing so through their actions. Footage circulating online reportedly shows Ms Rodrigues de Freitas being carried to the edge of the abandoned 'Skeleton Bridge' before falling, with an onlooker heard screaming for the cord to be attached.
Rope-jumping, distinct from bungee jumping, utilises low-stretch climbing ropes to create a pendulum-like swing, rather than the vertical bounce associated with elastic bungee cords. The three arrested men were observed wearing harnesses, suggesting they themselves were secured, but tragically, Ms Rodrigues de Freitas was not.
The abandoned 'Skeleton Bridge', located on the border of Limeira and Cordeirópolis, falls under the responsibility of the federal government. Brazil's Secretariat of Federal Assets (SPU) has stated its willingness to cooperate with the ongoing investigation. In a significant development, the City Hall of Limeira has announced its intention to sue the federal government, citing a failure to adequately manage the bridge and prevent such incidents.
Local officials have indicated that the instructors were associated with a private company offering rope-jumping activities, though some reports suggest they might have been part of informal groups. Ms Rodrigues de Freitas was buried the day after the tragic accident, as the investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding her death and the culpability of those involved.
