Eve Ogden Schaub is growing flax at home in Vermont with the aim of creating a linen dress, a project she describes as an attempt to find the "slowest fashion imaginable." She began the undertaking in April 2025, converting a 600 sq ft vegetable garden into a flax plot.
Schaub has harvested two crops of flax and is currently learning the various stages of processing the material. These steps include retting, breaking, scutching, hackling, and spinning the flax into yarn. She also plans to grow indigo plants for dyeing the yarn.
Once the flax is spun into linen yarn, Schaub intends to weave it on a loom before cutting and sewing the dress. She is planning to work with an experienced friend to design the garment using historical dress patterns.
