Woman with up to 100% chance of hereditary cancer joins choir

Hannah Simpson, 32, has an "up to 100% chance" of developing hereditary cancer due to a gene mutation and has joined a choir to share her story.

  • Hannah Simpson carries a mutation in the APC gene, which causes familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), a condition affecting about one in 8,000 to 10,000 people in the UK.
  • Doctors have told Ms Simpson she has an "up to 100% chance" of developing bowel cancer if she does not have surgery, and a much higher risk of other gastrointestinal cancers.
  • Ms Simpson's mother and granddad both had hereditary cancer, with her mother dying from terminal stomach cancer despite preventative bowel surgery.

Hannah Simpson, 32, has been informed by doctors that she faces an "up to 100% chance" of developing hereditary cancer. Ms Simpson's family carries a mutation in the APC gene, which leads to familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), a condition affecting approximately one in 8,000 to 10,000 people in the UK.

Ms Simpson's mother, Jeanette Simpson, died from terminal stomach cancer in 2022, despite having undergone preventative bowel surgery. Her granddad, Terry Cook, also had hereditary cancer.

Ms Simpson, from Rocester in Staffordshire, is monitored annually by medics for polyp growth. She anticipates a future decision to undergo life-altering surgery, similar to what her mother had, to prevent bowel cancer.

She has joined BBC Radio Derby's It Starts With You Choir, which debuted its song on BBC local radio stations across England on Sunday. The choir aims to provide support and encourage others to share their experiences with cancer.

Why this matters: The story highlights the impact of hereditary cancer and the importance of genetic testing and preventative measures for those at high risk.
