The body of a 55-year-old woman has been recovered from a pool in Sandwell Valley Country Park, West Bromwich, following her disappearance on Saturday afternoon. Emergency services, including specialist water rescue teams, were deployed to Swan Pool after reports of a person in difficulty in the water at approximately 4:30 PM.
West Midlands Police confirmed that specialist teams located the woman's body in the water. Despite efforts, nothing could be done to save her, and she was pronounced dead at the scene. The force has stated that her death is not being treated as suspicious, and they will be working with the coroner to establish the full circumstances.
In a statement, West Midlands Police extended their condolences, saying their thoughts were with the woman's family during this tragic time and confirming they are providing support. West Midlands Fire Service also confirmed their attendance, responding within five minutes of the initial call at 4:45 PM on Saturday, sending crews including those with specialist water rescue capabilities.
This incident adds to a concerning number of water-related fatalities reported across the UK during the recent periods of hot weather. Earlier on Saturday, the body of a 22-year-old man, Brody Leach, was recovered from a river in Shrewsbury, having been reported missing after entering the water on Friday morning. Other recent incidents include a man dying at an Essex beach on Friday and a 50-year-old man pronounced dead at Aberavon beach in Wales on Wednesday after encountering difficulties while swimming.
These tragic events highlight the inherent dangers of open water, even during warm conditions. Authorities consistently advise caution when near rivers, lakes, and the sea, urging individuals to be aware of hidden currents, cold water shock, and other potential hazards. The string of deaths serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with water activities during summer.
