The study specifically investigated the impact of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) – two common air pollutants – on children's developmental milestones. These pollutants are often generated by vehicle emissions and industrial activity, prevalent in urban environments.
Children's development was assessed at various stages, including at 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, and 36 months of age. The researchers correlated these developmental scores with estimated levels of air pollution exposure during their mothers' pregnancies. The findings indicate that higher prenatal exposure to these pollutants was associated with slower progress in areas such as communication, problem-solving, and motor skills.
