The Wombles are back, and they're not just making good use of bad rubbish – they're about to take the world by storm! After a 27-year hiatus, the lovable furry friends from Wimbledon Common are ready to return in a big way, thanks to a new global franchise deal that's set to bring them back into our lives in a blaze of colour and creativity.
This is a major coup for The Blair Partnership, who have overseen the consolidation of the brand's rights. The deal opens up a whole new world of possibilities – think TV shows, films, audio productions, books, theatre productions, live events, digital media, and even video games! It's the perfect opportunity to introduce the Wombles to a new generation of fans while still pleasing those who grew up with the beloved characters. And what better time to bring them back than now, when environmental concerns are at the forefront of our minds?
The Wombles were first conjured up by author Elisabeth Beresford in the late 1960s and quickly became a national phenomenon through their BBC stop-motion TV adaptation from 1973 to 1975. Mike Batt's catchy music and Bernard Cribbins' iconic voice work made them an integral part of British popular culture. Even when the original series ended, the franchise soldiered on with revivals on ITV, a feature film, and merchandise – cementing their place in our hearts.
This summer will see the launch of a Wombles YouTube channel, where classic episodes will rub shoulders with fresh live-action content, all presented by young hosts and influencers. These programmes are designed to inspire creativity and environmental awareness through activities like arts and crafts, cooking, and gardening – exactly what the Wombles have always been about.
And that's not all – several other projects are already in development, including an interactive digital game, audio productions featuring A-list voice casts, and a host of charitable and educational initiatives. Neil Blair from The Blair Partnership is convinced that this is just the beginning: "The Wombles are an iconic British brand with global appeal, distinctive characters that resonate with people of all ages." He's got high hopes for their multi-platform expansion – and we can't wait to see what they have in store!
The Wombles Community Charity is at the heart of this renewed push. With over 250 community groups and 50,000 registered volunteers on board, they're already making a difference by coordinating litter-picking, recycling, and educational projects across the UK. Their 'Be More Womble' campaign in 2026 aims to get even more people involved – and we can't wait to join in!
