The systematic study, which analysed samples over seven winters, indicates that the neurotoxic metal is likely coming from the wood itself, rather than from older sources such as lead-based paint.
Lead is a well-established neurotoxin, known to cause significant health problems, particularly affecting neurological development in children. Historically, widespread concern over lead's impact led to stringent regulations, including its removal from petrol and paint in the UK. This latest research raises questions about potential new pathways for exposure.
While the study was conducted by US scientists, its findings could have implications for air quality and public health in the UK, especially given the increasing popularity of wood-burning stoves.
