The World Cup fever has well and truly taken hold in UK pubs, with a staggering 5.5 million extra pints of draught beer and cider being served during the group stages – and it's all thanks to England's electrifying performances on the pitch! The data is in, and it paints a picture of unprecedented enthusiasm from fans flocking to their local watering holes to cheer on their favourite teams. Saturday's match against Panama was the biggest winner, with over 8 million pints being served across UK establishments – that's a whopping 20.9% higher than a typical June Saturday!
The stats are mind-boggling: England v Croatia on 17th June generated an estimated 2 million extra pints, representing a massive 55.5% uplift from normal trading levels. The subsequent match against Ghana added another 2.3 million, with sales soaring by 77%! But it's not just the Three Lions flying high – Scotland's national team has also brought in a significant haul, with an estimated 1.3 million extra pints sold across their three group-stage games.
Geographically speaking, the East of England and the East Midlands were the biggest winners on Saturday, with sales growth rates of 28.4% and 25.5% respectively. London also saw a notable increase of 23.2%, while Scotland's pubs experienced a more modest uplift of 3.3%. But with England set to take on the Democratic Republic of the Congo in the knockout stages this week, expect pub sales to reach new heights once again!
For Alison Jordan, CEO of the Oxford Partnership, it's clear that major sporting events are a game-changer for the hospitality industry: "The cumulative 5.5 million additional pints from England's group games and another 1.3 million north of the border from Scotland's fixtures is a testament to the immense value these events bring to British pubs."
