Connor Millar, co-founder of Atlas Jet Charter, has witnessed a substantial rise in business aviation activity throughout the World Cup, with demand on specific routes reaching unprecedented highs. "We're seeing an exceptionally strong demand for private jet charters, particularly on popular host-city routes," he noted. "This is resulting in a significant increase in charter rates, as operators struggle to meet the surge in demand."
Millar attributed the price surge to a combination of factors, including constrained aircraft availability, increased repositioning costs, airport slot restrictions, and additional operational fees tied to the event. While many fans initially travelled to North America via commercial airlines, they are increasingly opting for private jets to navigate the distances between matches with greater ease.
The World Cup's impact on the private aviation sector extends beyond tournament travel. Airports are implementing higher fees, and charter availability is becoming increasingly restricted for non-World Cup related travel. Millar explained that the concentration of demand around major cities has led to pricing on many domestic US routes reaching or surpassing capped hourly rates offered through their Jet Membership programme.
As operators reposition aircraft to meet World Cup demand, the wider charter market is experiencing knock-on effects. Reduced availability on non-World Cup routes and increased pricing for clients not directly related to the tournament are just a few of the consequences. With the competition set to conclude in New Jersey this Sunday, private jet charter companies will be eager to return to more normal levels of demand – but it may take some time.
