The DC-4 aircraft plummeted into the sea just minutes after take-off when two engines failed. What followed was a desperate scramble among survivors to locate life vests and deploy life rafts – a chaotic scene exacerbated by difficulties faced by crew members in deploying emergency equipment. Of the 69 people on board, 39 bodies were never recovered.
The wreckage of the Clipper Endeavor lies approximately 600 metres beneath the surface, discovered in June by undersea exploration firm Deep Sea Vision using a state-of-the-art robotic sonar drone. The breakthrough follows years of tireless research by the Air/Sea Heritage Foundation, whose president, Russ Matthews, was motivated to investigate after discovering a luggage tag from the flight on a Florida beach in 2019.
