Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson said the team had to "block everything out" as they delivered a convincing 4-1 Championship victory against Preston North End at the Racecourse. The win saw Wrexham return to winning ways after a 2-1 home defeat by West Bromwich Albion in midweek, which had led to reports of mounting pressure on Parkinson.
Parkinson, who has managed over 1,000 games, acknowledged that criticism comes the way of managers and players after a loss, noting it is intensified for Wrexham due to the club's profile. He added that he and assistant Steve Parkin were eager to get back with the squad to bring the group together.
First goals for the club from Joe Worrall and Ben Whiteman gave Wrexham a 2-1 half-time lead. Sam Smith and Kieffer Moore then added second-half goals to complete an emphatic victory over the Championship's bottom side. Parkinson expressed confidence in the squad's ability to be competitive this season.
Parkinson also cited an extensive injury list, including Max Cleworth, Nathan Broadhead, and Dan Sheaf, as a significant factor in Wrexham's inconsistent start. He described it as possibly the worst spell of injuries during his time at the club, but believes those players will return, creating strong competition for places.
