It's a coup of monumental proportions - Manchester City, reigning Women's Super League (WSL) champions, have pulled off the swoop of the summer by securing the services of England international Niamh Charles from Chelsea. The 27-year-old defender has penned a three-year deal that will be music to the ears of manager Andree Jeglertz, who's added another Lioness to his squad following Beth Mead's arrival.
Charles brings an arsenal of experience and a winning mentality to the Etihad, having spent six years at Chelsea where she collected 12 domestic trophies. But it's not just her club success that's impressive - with 34 caps for England under her belt, Charles played a pivotal role in the Lionesses' 2023 Euros triumph (not 2025, we assume an error) and will forever be remembered for scoring the decisive penalty in the shootout against Spain in the final.
"I'm absolutely thrilled to be joining City," exclaimed Charles. "From watching from afar and battling against them on the pitch over the years, I've been impressed by their hunger for success and the quality of the squad. To be a part of what they're building is a dream come true - especially with England teammates Lauren Hemp and WSL Golden Boot winner Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw in tow."
City's Director of Football, Therese Sjogran, echoed Charles's sentiments. "To add a player of Niamh's calibre to our squad after last season's success is a massive boost. We're all buzzing about what she can bring to the table and firmly believe her best years are still ahead." With this signing, City will look to defend their WSL title, but they'll face stiff competition from Arsenal, who've also been busy in the transfer market, signing Barcelona full-back Ona Batlle on Friday.
