Social media giant X has unveiled a new video editing and recording suite within its iOS application, a strategic move designed to foster a culture of original content creation and combat the pervasive issue of recycled material on the platform. The update, which includes advanced features such as the ability to overlay video captions in multiple languages and customise their appearance, alongside green-screen tools that integrate with a user's camera roll or other X posts, marks a significant step in X's ongoing efforts to enhance its creator ecosystem.
Nikita Bier, X's head of product, highlighted the company's commitment to empowering creators, stating that providing tools for original content and rewarding those who use them is a top priority. He acknowledged that a substantial portion of content from top accounts on X consists of repurposed material, sometimes years after its initial virality elsewhere. Bier expressed optimism that a more 'functional' video editor would lead to a greater volume of original content unique to X.
However, the introduction of a video editor alone may not fully address the challenge of encouraging creators to post exclusively on X. Competitors like TikTok, Meta, and YouTube have established robust creator ecosystems with consistent and reliable payout structures, offering significant incentives for creators to remain on their platforms. X may also need to refine its creator relations and bolster its content protection mechanisms, as it currently lacks built-in tools for creators to report stolen work and take action, unlike the protections offered by Meta for Reels creators or YouTube's long-standing tools for managing unauthorised re-uploads.
A more fundamental hurdle for X remains its battle against an overwhelming population of bots. These automated accounts not only inflate view counts but also actively scrape and steal content, undermining the integrity of the platform and the value of original work. In April, Bier revealed the scale of the problem, stating that X was identifying and suspending '208 bots per minute and growing', with half of the product team reportedly focused on mitigating spam. The company believes that tackling this issue is crucial for creating a fair and monetisable environment for legitimate creators.
The upgrade is not merely an attempt to emulate platforms like TikTok; Bier noted that video posts already account for nearly half of the impressions on X, underscoring the strategic importance of video content for the platform's overall user experience and business model. While X is not alone in facing an increase in spam and bot content in the AI era – with platforms like Reddit also implementing AI tools to combat this – its success in fostering a thriving creator community will depend on a multi-faceted approach that extends beyond just editing tools to include robust content protection and effective bot mitigation.
