X, the social network owned by Elon Musk, announced on Monday the launch of a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, designed to significantly ease the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools with its platform. This development means that AI assistants, such as Claude and Grok Build, can now connect directly to the X API using a user's own account permissions, without developers needing to build and host their own MCP servers.
The Model Context Protocol is an open standard that provides a common framework for AI models to interact with external services and tools. Previously, developers aiming to enable AI assistants to access X data faced the complex task of setting up their own MCP server, connecting it to the X API, and managing authentication. X's new hosted solution removes these infrastructure hurdles, allowing developers to dedicate more time to innovating and building their core AI applications.
This strategic move is set to enhance X's appeal as a real-time information network, offering a wealth of data for AI applications to retrieve and analyse. While the hosted MCP does not introduce new capabilities for data access, such as searching posts, looking up users, or analysing trends, it makes these existing functionalities much more accessible to AI tools. X is now aligning itself with a growing number of major platforms, including GitHub, Slack, Notion, Stripe, and Salesforce, that offer their own official MCP servers or endpoints.
Concerns have been raised that removing integration barriers could potentially lead to an increase in automated posting or spam on the platform. However, X has clarified that the MCP tool is specifically designed not to be compatible with its Write API endpoints. This means it is not possible to use the hosted MCP server to post content autonomously or at all on X, addressing potential misuse. The platform also stressed that the hosted MCP adheres to X's existing API rules, which continue to enforce restrictions against spammy behaviour.
In efforts to combat AI-generated spam, particularly programmatic replies, X updated its API v2 earlier this year. Furthermore, the company recently adjusted its API pricing, increasing the cost for publishing posts to £0.015 and posting links to £0.20. X stated these price increases were implemented to "curb vectors of misuse," making it more expensive for bad actors to engage in spamming activities on the platform.
