Ghana's World Cup dream is back on track after a thrilling 1-0 victory over Panama in Toronto - and what a finish it was! Caleb Yirenkyi scored a stoppage-time stunner to send the Black Stars soaring into top spot in Group L, alongside England. The Ghana striker steered home Brandon Thomas-Asante's pinpoint cross with just seconds left on the clock, sparking wild celebrations among the travelling fans.
The first half was a battle for control in torrential rain, with Panama dominating possession and forcing Ghana onto the back foot. Cecilio Waterman came close to opening the scoring when he forced Lawrence Ati-Zigi into a top-class save in the second minute. Cristian Martínez saw his penalty claim rejected, while Jiovany Ramos fired high over the bar from distance - leaving Ghana searching for a way through.
Ati-Zigi received treatment late in the first half and was replaced by Benjamin Asare at the break, but it was Ghana who looked revitalised after the interval. Jonas Adjetey headed straight at Panama's goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera, before Jordan Ayew almost slid home an opener for Ghana - only to be denied by a timely Ramos touch.
As the game opened up in the latter stages, Ramos curled a beauty wide from distance for Panama, but it was Ghana who had the final say. Thomas-Asante delivered the decisive cross and Yirenkyi made no mistake, thumping home the winner to send the Ghana camp into raptures.
Panama's head coach Thomas Christiansen described his team's defeat as "painful" - a sentiment echoed by the Panama players themselves. But despite the setback, Christiansen vowed that his team would bounce back against Croatia in their next match, saying: "We will fight until the last breath!" The result has handed Ghana a significant boost in their bid to progress from Group L, setting up an intriguing showdown between the Black Stars and England.
