City of York Council has granted detailed planning approval for the initial phase of the £2bn York Central regeneration scheme. This decision clears the way for work to commence next year on the project, which Housing Secretary Angela Rayner described as a "fantastic opportunity" and one of the country's biggest regeneration projects.
The wider 110-acre development, which has been in planning for around 40 years, is set to include more than 1,000 homes in its first phase. McLaren Regeneration, in collaboration with Arlington Real Estate, plans for at least 20% of these homes to be allocated for social and affordable rent and sale.
Beyond housing, the plans encompass a new commercial district, a hotel, and a western entrance to York railway station. New public squares, a park, cycle routes, footpaths, and courtyards are also planned to enhance connectivity with the existing city. Construction for the first phase is expected to start in 2027, with completion anticipated in 2030.
