Zelensky to press Trump on air defences amid escalated Russian attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is in Washington for talks with US President Donald Trump, aiming to secure commitments for bolstering Kyiv's anti-ballistic missile defences. This comes as Russia has escalated its ballistic missile attacks on Ukraine.

  • Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to press Donald Trump for support on a licence for Ukraine to produce Patriot interceptor missiles.
  • Russia has recently escalated deadly ballistic missile attacks on Ukraine's capital.
  • Moscow's mayor reported that 390 drones targeted the capital region overnight.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is due to hold talks with US President Donald Trump at the White House, where he hopes to firm up commitments to bolstering Kyiv's anti-ballistic missile defences. Zelensky is expected to press Trump over support for Ukraine to be given a licence to produce Patriot interceptor missiles.

This visit occurs as Russia has escalated deadly ballistic missile attacks on Ukraine's capital. Zelensky has stated that interceptors are urgently needed, though Patriot missiles are in short supply globally.

Meanwhile, Moscow's Mayor Sergei Sobyanin reported that more than 390 Ukrainian drones targeted the region between Monday evening and Tuesday morning local time. Most of these drones were reportedly intercepted by air defences, though footage confirmed damage to a high-rise building and a warehouse.

President Vladimir Putin, speaking in Moscow, stated that Russia's enemies were using "terrorist methods" but would "never break" the Russian people. Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, an ally, suggested at the weekend that a peace deal could be reached if the conflict was halted for negotiations.

Why this matters: Securing a licence for Ukraine to produce Patriot interceptor missiles could significantly enhance its air defence capabilities against ongoing Russian ballistic missile attacks.
