Thousands more young people aged 16 to 18 are set to benefit from half-price rail fares from this September, as the government extends the validity of the 16-17 Saver railcard. From 17 August 2026, these railcards will be valid for a full year from the date of purchase.
The previous rules meant the railcard expired when the holder turned 18, which reportedly prevented over 70,000 young people from accessing the 50% discount last year. This change aims to support students on their commutes to school, college, or training.
Lord Peter Hendy, the Rail Minister, stated that this change will help young people and their families reduce travel costs. Jacqueline Starr, Executive Chair and CEO of the Rail Delivery Group, noted that the extension ensures young people can continue to benefit from 50% off rail travel throughout their education.
