Volunteers from Durham City Riverscape Community discovered a plaque beneath overgrown ivy during a litter pick last weekend. The plaque, found on a wall near Elvet Bridge, marks the 1883 creation of a city riverwalk.

The plaque identifies the walk between Elvet Bridge and Bow Lane as Fearon Walk, named after Reverend William Andrewes Fearon. Mr Fearon served as Durham School's headmaster from 1882 to 1884.

Adam Shanley, co-founder of the volunteer group and clerk of City of Durham Parish Council, stated that the name of the walk was news to both the volunteers and members of the parish council. There are hopes to trace any relatives of Fearon in Durham to gather more information about the plaque.
