Many of England's cathedrals are facing significant financial challenges, with 80% currently in structural deficit, according to Dr Coco Parkinson-Huggins, a researcher at the Theos thinktank. Several cathedrals, including those in Peterborough and St Davids, have reportedly reached a crisis point.
Despite 74% of adults in England having visited a cathedral in the last three years, these historic buildings receive no secure state funding. They also receive limited contributions from central church authorities and are not subject to the same VAT exemptions on repairs or maintenance as museums and galleries offering free admission.
To address financial struggles, one in four cathedrals in England now charges for entry. Cathedrals have also diversified their income, including through activities such as silent discos, but continue to face difficulties.
