A collection of 'missing' posters from the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks will be publicly displayed for the first time this week. Artist and photographer Phil Buehler amassed more than 500 images of these posters, which sought information about individuals who vanished in the attacks.
The exhibition, titled 'Countenance: The 9/11 Missing Posters', will feature 144 of Buehler's photographs. These images are presented across 24 translucent vellum panels, arranged in vertical pairs that evoke the twin towers. The installation is located at Most Holy Trinity – St Mary’s church in Brooklyn.
Buehler began photographing the posters on September 11, 2001, and continued for several weeks. He noted that the posters, initially pleas for information, later transformed into personal memorials as the hope for survivors diminished. The exhibition is co-curated by Sarah Celentano and Olena Speranska.
