Aaron Ramsdale, who was within touching distance of winning the Premier League with Arsenal in April 2023, is now Southampton's fourth-choice goalkeeper. The 28-year-old finds himself without senior football this season, a significant change from his time as an England international.
Ramsdale's decline began after a costly error in a 3-3 draw with Southampton in April 2023, which impacted Arsenal's 2022-23 title bid. Four months later, Arsenal signed David Raya, who quickly became the number one goalkeeper. Ramsdale was sold to Southampton for £25m in August 2024 after returning from Euro 2024.
His move to Southampton did not work out as planned, with the team finishing bottom of the Premier League in 2024-25. He then moved to Newcastle United on loan for the 2025-26 campaign, but only made 12 Premier League appearances. Southampton boss Tonda Eckert has indicated Ramsdale is not part of his plans this season, with Daniel Peretz as number one.
