  • Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive, secured the Democratic nomination for US Senate in Michigan.

  • The race saw over $40m in outside spending, including from groups associated with Aipac.

Abdul El-Sayed has won the Democratic primary for US Senate in Michigan, becoming the latest leftwing candidate to secure the party's nomination ahead of November's midterm elections. Mr El-Sayed, a progressive, defeated Haley Stevens, a moderate US representative who had the backing of the party's establishment.

The race was called on Wednesday morning. Mr El-Sayed will now face Republican Mike Rogers in the contest to represent the midwestern state in the Senate. Mr Rogers was also the Republican nominee for US Senate in 2024.

Mr El-Sayed, 41, is a former public health official whose campaign focused on a universal healthcare model. The primary also saw significant outside spending, with more than $40m reportedly flowing into the race from groups supporting Ms Stevens or attacking Mr El-Sayed.

Why this matters: Retaining the Michigan Senate seat is described as critical to Democrats' hopes of winning back the US Senate this year and a crucial part of the map for the 2028 presidential election.
