Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has stated that re-opening the Strait of Hormuz is essential for bringing down the cost of living in the UK. This comment was made ahead of his talks with US counterpart Marco Rubio in Washington.
Mr Miliband, a Labour minister, is in the US capital for his first official one-on-one meeting with Mr Rubio. The pair are also expected to discuss the war in Ukraine and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
The strategic sea route, which was open before the US and Israel launched a war in February, has been a flashpoint in the Middle East conflict. Disruption to trade through the Strait of Hormuz has reportedly driven up fuel and food prices.
Mr Miliband also plans to stress that Ukraine's security is inseparable from European and transatlantic security, and will restate the UK's commitment to stand with Kyiv. During his visit, he will also meet World Bank president Ajay Banga to discuss development, climate change, and strengthening global resilience, as he will be taking the UK's seat on the World Bank board.
