The Clacton by-election, scheduled for 13 August, will feature a record 34 candidates, resulting in what is understood to be the longest ballot paper in British electoral history. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage is being challenged by 33 other candidates, as the main parties are not standing against him.
Among the candidates are eight individuals who have previously appeared on multiple ballot papers across the UK. These include Reclaim Party leader Laurence Fox, satirical candidates Count Binface and Howling Laud Hope, and others from smaller political parties or standing as independents.
The eight candidates who have made at least three attempts to be elected to Westminster or become London's mayor are John Stevens (Rejoin EU), William Clouston (Social Democratic Party), Laurence Fox (Reclaim), Joseph 77 (independent), Count Binface, and three candidates from the Monster Raving Loony Party: Howling Laud Hope, Nick the Incredible Flying Brick, and Baron Von Thunderclap.
Parliamentary candidates are required to have a valid nomination, be authorised by their party's nominating officer if applicable, and be nominated by 10 people living in the constituency. A £500 deposit is also required, which is returned if the candidate secures more than 5% of the vote share.
