Acclaimed film, TV, and stage actor Phyllida Law, mother to actors Emma and Sophie Thompson, has died at 94. Her manager, Jacky Leggo, confirmed the news, stating Law "died supremely peacefully at home, surrounded by all of her family."
Law's acting career began in 1932 at Bristol Old Vic Theatre school. She went on to establish herself as a major stage performer in the 1960s, with roles opposite Alec Guinness and in Alan Bennett's Habeas Corpus.
Her film credits started in the 1980s, often appearing alongside her daughters. These included Peter's Friends (1992), Much Ado About Nothing (1993), and The Winter Guest (1997), where she played a mother opposite Emma Thompson. Law also had roles in films such as The Time Machine (2002) and Nanny McPhee (2005), and appeared in British TV shows including Midsomer Murders and Kingdom.
Law was awarded an OBE in 2014 for her services to drama and charitable causes.
