British director John Irvin, known for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, dies aged 86

John Irvin, the British film-maker behind the Bafta-winning BBC miniseries Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Hollywood action films, has died at 86.

British film-maker John Irvin, director of the Bafta-winning BBC miniseries Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, has died at the age of 86. His producer, Claire Evans, confirmed to the Guardian that Irvin died “peacefully at home” on 11 August, surrounded by his family.

Irvin's 50-year career encompassed TV, documentaries, and action films, showcasing his versatility. He worked with notable figures from Fred Astaire to Arnold Schwarzenegger.

His most acclaimed work, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, an adaptation of John le Carré's novel starring Alec Guinness, earned two Baftas. This success led him to direct Hollywood films such as The Dogs of War, Raw Deal, and Hamburger Hill.

Born in Wallasey, Cheshire, in 1940, Irvin began his career after studying at the London Film School. His final film was 2016's Mandela's Gun, and he was reportedly working on a new cut of the film when he died. He is survived by his three children and two grandchildren.
