Indian authorities have ordered actor Imran Khan to leave the country by 28 October. The order follows his participation in a protest on 10 October in Mumbai, which sought electoral reforms.
Khan, an American citizen who holds an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card, was served a notice by the Foreigners' Regional Registration Office (FRRO) for allegedly violating laws by protesting. Police stated that Khan participated in the agitation at Mumbai's August Kranti Maidan, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, despite not being an Indian citizen.
The actor's lawyer has stated that no provision of the law or any rule for OCI cardholders prohibits him from participating in a protest and will challenge the order in the Bombay High Court. The Press Trust of India reports that Khan's petition against the Mumbai police notice termed it as "drastic".
Khan, known for films like Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na, was briefly detained by police along with other protesters after the event. This order comes as Khan returns to acting this year with a Netflix film after a decade-long hiatus.
