Afcon 2025 final dispute heard by Court of Arbitration for Sport

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) is hearing Senegal's appeal against the decision to strip them of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) title. A verdict is not expected today.

  • Senegal are appealing a Confederation of African Football (Caf) ruling that awarded Morocco a 3-0 victory in the 2025 Afcon final.
  • The original final, played in January, saw Senegal win 1-0 against hosts Morocco.
  • Cas has stated that a final decision will not be rendered on the day of the hearing.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas) is today hearing Senegal's appeal against the decision to strip them of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) title. The final, played in January against hosts Morocco, ended in a 1-0 victory for Senegal, who lifted the trophy.

However, the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FMRF) lodged a complaint, arguing Senegal had breached competition regulations by leaving the ground before the end of the match. In March, a Confederation of African Football (Caf) appeals board agreed, ruling that Senegal had forfeited the match and awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory.

Senegal's federation (FSF) described the ruling as "unfair, unprecedented and unacceptable" and appealed to Cas. The hearing is expected to conclude this afternoon, but Cas has warned that a final decision will not be delivered today.

Cas's code states that appeal verdicts should be delivered a maximum of four months after a hearing, with guidelines suggesting less than three months.
