A coroner has ruled that three sisters who drowned in the sea off Brighton in May collectively decided to end their own lives. The bodies of Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, all from London, were recovered in the early hours of 13 May.

The inquest at Woodvale coroner’s court in Brighton heard that the women had travelled to Birmingham on 11 May to visit the former home of their mother, Janice Adetoro, who died by drowning in 2010. They were dropped off near Brookvale Park lake, close to where their mother died, and returned to London on 12 May.

On the evening of 12 May, the sisters took a pre-booked taxi to Brighton, arriving near the seafront at 10.21pm. They were reportedly last seen alive on CCTV from the beach at 2.42am on 13 May. Senior coroner Penelope Schofield concluded that the medical cause of death for all three women was drowning, and that they died by suicide, noting they entered the sea in darkness, could not swim, and sea conditions were adverse.
