The far-right Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) achieved a significant victory in Saxony-Anhalt on 6 September, becoming the largest party in the state parliament. The party secured 44% of the vote, marking a record turnout.
Should the AfD form a government, it would represent the first time a far-right party has governed a German state since the Nazi era. The AfD is described as far-right, anti-immigrant, and pro-Kremlin.
The AfD was founded in west Germany, and a significant portion of its leadership originated from western states such as Rheinland-Pfalz and Nordrhein-Westfalen.
