Dr Lin Chia-lung, Taiwan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, has asserted that restoring confidence in the United Nations must involve rejecting coercion by authoritarian states. He writes that the rules-based order is under increasing strain as authoritarian states attempt to weaken its safeguards and reshape international rules to serve their own interests.
Dr Lin points to the Indo-Pacific region, where he states China's militarisation and grey-zone warfare threaten stability. He claims these tactics, including maritime aggression, missile tests, and daily cyberattacks, aim to unilaterally reshape existing rules and norms in China's favour.
The minister also states that China abuses the rules-based order by misrepresenting UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, adopted in 1971. He argues that this resolution, which covers China's representation at the UN, does not mention Taiwan or address its participation in the UN system. Dr Lin claims China uses this misrepresentation to block Taiwan's involvement in the UN and other international organisations.
Dr Lin highlights Taiwan's strengths in technology, healthcare, and disaster preparedness, as well as its economic growth rate, which he states is among the highest in Asia. He suggests that Taiwan is a willing and capable partner in addressing global challenges.
