Concerns surrounding artificial intelligence (AI) and its associated data centres are contributing to a growing anti-establishment sentiment in US politics. Last week, Bernie Sanders and Steve Bannon addressed a Washington group, both calling for a stop to AI and its data centres and criticising the corporate entities behind AI.
This comes as a recent NBC poll indicated that 54% of Americans agree that "when it comes to politics and society, nothing really matters because powerful people will always do whatever they want."
Public opposition to data centres is significant, with approximately 70% of the public reportedly against them. Additionally, more than 60% of Americans, including 60% of Trump supporters, believe AI has the potential to destroy humanity.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the percentage of the total economy allocated to workers' wages fell to a record low of 52.9% by mid-2026, down from over 65% in 1947. The remaining share goes to investors, business owners, and corporate profits.
